Inderjit Prasad
Enlarging
Water colour on Paper, 44" x 32", 2007
The elements that Indrajit Prasad incorporates in his images seem as though they have been placed with uncertainty. The viewer tends to question their awkwardness, as well as their indifference to the other elements that make up the work of art. These awkward moments and unusual representations, for Prasad, epitomize the terror of existence.
Prasad’s surreal images include monkeys performing acrobatic acts, anthropomorphic pieces of furniture, cross sections of fruits and vegetables that reveal unusual toothy interiors, and benign floating pieces of machinery and construction materials, amongst many others. While these components hang randomly in midair, almost all of Prasad’s assembled compositions are usually engulfed by dismal skies. These skies remain monochromatic, differing only in texture – sometimes dabbed or splotched, and in other instances, swirled and dragged across the surface. Prasad’s washed out colours enhance the bleak and reflective mood of his works. Perhaps, this grim, faded palette enunciates his concerns about the depletion of the environment and the harsh realities faced by ordinary human beings in modern-urban settings.
Born in 1978 in West Bengal, Prasad completed his Bachelor’s degree from I.K.S. University, Chhattisgarh, and subsequently completed his Master’s degree from S.N. School of Fine Arts, University of Hyderabad. He has held two solo shows, ‘Man Made’ and ‘Eye on the World’, both held at Bombay Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008 and 2006 respectively. He has also participated in several group shows, the most recent being, ‘(Sub)Urban Texts’, Gallery Espace, New Delhi, in 2007; ‘Thoughts & Being’, Osmosis Gallery, in 2006; ‘Black & White’, Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2006; Summer Show, Gallery Beyond, Mumbai, in 2006 and 2005; and Rabindra Bhavan, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 2002.
